CFG082 Docker daemon redirected off-host (DOCKER_HOST / docker -H)
Severity: warn (error when the daemon host is a raw IP)
OWASP: LLM02:2026 – Sensitive Information Disclosure
What cfgaudit checks
CFG005 flags ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL redirecting API traffic and CFG046 flags the OpenTelemetry exporter pointing off-host. Pointing the Docker CLI at a remote daemon is the same mechanism for a third data stream: whichever daemon the CLI talks to is where containers build and run, and it can be asked for local images and build context. A repo-controlled config that redirects the daemon to a machine you may not control can run workloads on — or read data from — that host.
Claude Code 2.1.214 added a permission prompt for docker commands with daemon-redirect flags, treating this as an action worth gating rather than auto-approving.
cfgaudit flags a redirect to a remote transport (tcp:// or ssh://) at a non-loopback host in either place:
- the
settings.jsonenvblock keyDOCKER_HOST, or - a command site — hooks and the command-running helpers (
apiKeyHelper,statusLine, …) — as an inlineDOCKER_HOST=…assignment or adocker/docker-compose-H/--hostflag.
| Severity | When |
|---|---|
error |
daemon host is a raw IP literal (a hardcoded remote daemon) |
warn |
daemon host is any other non-loopback address (e.g. a hostname) |
Local transports (unix://, npipe://, fd://), loopback hosts (localhost, 127.0.0.0/8, ::1, 0.0.0.0), empty values, and pure shell-variable references ($DOCKER_HOST, ${VAR}) are not flagged. The -H/--host flag is only trusted when the command actually invokes docker, so a curl -H <header> is not mistaken for a redirect.

Safe alternative
Leave DOCKER_HOST unset (or point it at the local socket unix:///var/run/docker.sock) and do not pass -H/--host in a committed hook or helper. If a workflow genuinely needs a remote daemon, that endpoint belongs in a developer's own machine-scoped environment — not in repo-controlled config that runs on every clone.
